This focus-stacked image was the result of a long hike on a moonless night in Great Sand Dunes National Park. I had to make this hike twice, actually, after thunderstorms and sandstorms forced me to turn back. My parents gave me this brass compass and sundial when I graduated from high school "so I could always find my way home." The Great Sand Dunes were once an ancient system of lakes, so I thought this nautical antique fit the scene.
